It may have been the Victorians that started it? - but most books then were printed/coloured in the Victorian era!
Thorburn lived from 1860 until 1935 and exhibited between 1880 and 1900. - - Houghton's book first published in 1879.
So unlikely commenced until very very late in Victorian times which ended 1901.
