I just happened to be going past in the week with a float rod so I cheekily dropped in for half an hour. The pool is suffering from low water levels and reed encroachment. You can see where there was a swim once, with a board, now high and dry and surrounded by reeds.

I did have a couple of cheeky casts. It is (now) extremely shallow - perhaps only 12-18 inches - and full of very stunted rudd.

It looks ripe for a crucian conservation project on the quiet and so long as there are no king carp in there (I saw no signs) it would do very well and probably not attract any attention.

Those poles look a bit on the heavy side?
A few beers in the crate might lighten them though.

I fished the Roding at Passingford with the rest of the Eagle Specimen Group in the 60s before they put the dredger through and wrecked it.

The Hollows themselves were " interesting" with more focus needed on what was happening behind in the bushes after dark than what was going on in the water! Great Times!

Thanks to Dave Burr, I have the copy of Creel magazine from 1963 with the photograph of the mill. It is a rather sad sight now, having revisited the spot today, with a modern slip weir in place.

The fishing seemed better with lockgates. Sad times

We’d be sat there and a few leaves would appear first with just a slight increase in flow.

“He’s opened the gates” we’d say,

Ten minutes later it would be a foot up and a small torrent!
