Rod rests.

The one [& nearly only] piece of tackle that I seem to leave behind me somewhere on the bank at least once a season!

The return to the forked stick seems like a good idea!

I once left a (cheap) wire rod rest in the bank of a rarely visited river in February of one season - and when I returned to fish the same spot in the following October it was still there! I considered just leaving them in place at all my favourite spots in much the same way as I leave a float or two hanging from a nearby tree......

Mine have always gone if I haven't realised & recovered them the same day!

On the other hand, I have found a few replacements from the bank.

I once did a 10 mile detour to look for [& find] a plummet that I'd owned for 35 years & "lost" 2 weeks previously [when a replacement had cost 75p]!

I bought 3 very expensive quick release boat rod rests for my punt, so I can troll with plugs whilst rowing. A friend took a likeing to them and fancied one for his rowing boat. Just after his birthday, whilst fishing from my punt with said friend, I presented one of these very expensive rod rests to him. And in doing so, I clumsily dropped it over the side into 8' of weed infested river!! Needless to say, I now only have 1 very expensive quick release boat rod rest, and I have learnt to be a bit more carefull and not to dangle tackle over the side of the boat!!

Don't see the point using a boat if fishing in such shallow water :sarcasm:

I've always travelled light whether roving on the river or stillwater fishing, so I pick up a forked stick as I go along. A cane and pin looks so rustic when balanced on natural rod rests. Nothing artificial that I've tried looks quite right. Trouble is that despite placing sticks in various secret stashes for next time, they always seem to vanish or I can't remember where I last put one!
