I was following the clues and waiting for this

First clue was the purchase for Christmas of a dividing head.

Second clue was the questions of the materiel on BB reel and Walkers account of ‘ flaming swarf’

I know from turning aluminium billet to produce Walker net hinge-pieces ( T pieces) the amount of scarf produced. Not quite enough to sell to a scrap merchant but enough for the local tip to question if you are a business!

Thank you for the kind comments chaps, it's all a bit trial and error at the moment but very satisfying.

I just can't believe that people just start making centre pin reels, yet so many do, even in our remote neck of the woods.

I guess that everyone who does this must basically have an engineering background. You don't just wake up and say "Well, I think I'm going to make a centre pin reel today." Well I don't anyway......

Super result Steve, is that finish with carbide tools? Re: wood - sapele or cherry to contrast with the bright finish of the Ali. You planning on one piece or a composite back?

Yes - Ebay's finest El-Cheapo carbide, although they are aluminium cutting tips so more polished and a little sharper than the standard gold tips.

I'm toying with the idea of some kind of inlay on the back, set inside a decorative brass inlaid ring - but I'm also seriously considering keeping it very plain and simple for the 1st build. To be totally honest I'm making it up as I go along, so expect this to change several times between now and when I actually get to that bit.

How you getting on Steve? Good progress I trust

We're making slow headway - it's hard to get much done in term time as weekends are mostly spent marking books and planning lessons.

The check cog/wheel is done and fitted and a sapele back plate is also done. Next job will be the pin itself and the associated brasswork.

This will probably have to go on hold for a little while now, as although the Easter break is looming there are quite a few rods that need varnishing.
