That really is a lovely little rod!

The Wallis cast is all about the timing, isn't it. I can cast a heavy float, but I've never thought about spinning with a centrepin. That's really a good way to get more practice.

What about retrieving the lure, isn't it rather slow?

It's slow if you use a small diameter pin. I first took this rod out (years ago now) with a 3" Coxon which was great fun as you can 'give it the beans' and whack a lure out but yes the retrieval was cr*p due to the size of the reel, obviously. So on the Trent it was'nt the right reel for the task but a bit of fun.
You just need to pick the right reel for the job really, a 4" wide or narrow pre-war Aerial you really need to put a bit of backing line on the reel too effectively increasing the diameter of the line layes/pillars to increase the line retrieval rate (again if you wish to, also protects the line layes/pillars). You will notice on Garry Mills reels nowadays his line layes/pillars are positions higher on the drum flanges therefore you don't need backing line to do the job (I still put a little on for protection of the pillars).
If you look at the other photos I have on here you'll see on the older Aerials I have a load of white backing line on most of them. But it's not necessary its again personal choice. Ttfn

Mark my words chaps.. the Badger is one of the best Wallis cast practitioners I have ever had the pleasure to fish with. He is a superb exponent.

Weird,yes it is a lovely rod but what a lovely pike that is too ,looks to be in superb condition,she hardly has a mention
