Whilst it might not be traditional as I'm not sure how far back they date, I required a coiled lanyard for my new fly fishing scoop net so rather than buyone I thought I'd make my own.
3' of strimmer line a couple if clip swivels and some shrink tube ta da
Simple to make just needs coiling tightly around something securing then boiling for 10min then dunking in ice cold water to 'set' it. Hopefully it should prevent my net from disappearing without me noticing if it releases from the magnetic attachment

Oh forgot I ran some superglue down the shrink tube as I didn't have any crimps

Yes that should probably work too, been thinking if it was taped to something then immeresed in water you could probably microwave it in half the time
