grice & young avon royal supreme wobbling
dear all,
thanks for checking in. and thanks for this great forum! and for your opinion.
got myself a nice royal supreme in really good condition. it runs very nicely, more than a minute but more importantly starts to run easily.
https://youtu.be/kuaw6SZGEd4
however, the spool kind of wobbles and I‘ve made a video. its not that bad as it seems in the video, and the reel works fine, but I wondered if there would be any way to fix this and get it straight again. does the spool sit badly on the pin, or what could be the problem?
thank you so much for help and hints,
michael
cheers from vienna, austria

Welcome to the TFF, Michael!
I watched the video and it didn't think your reel wobbled too much. As long as it starts easily and runs smoothly, I wouldn't worry about it.
More important is, to clean the bushing and the pin thoroughly and to adjust the small grub screw as exactly as possible.

thanks for your reply and good advice to not worry too much
yeah
cleaned it well, wasnt that dirty, and it took me a while to understand the concept of the adjustmebt screw
at first thought i had ruined something
I can recommend japanese camellia oil ... pure without chemicals. it wont get sticky but cant confirm any long time effects ... but its used for high end knives

I think the reel has been dropped at some time, both upper and lower rims are lifting up at the same place. If you mark that place with ink you could find the centre and possibly lightly tap it straight again on a flat hard surface or over an edge...?. Be patient, that bend has been there maybe sixty years!

Good afternoon,I've looked at the video and with the amount of wobble on the reel I would leave well alone, sometimes trying to true up a reel can be very trying without the help of a dail indicator ,you are useing your eye judgedment that can be difficult of how much run out and where to put pressure to true it up,I have been a tool maker/ instrument maker all my life and you need good eyes and judgement to put the slight wobble right.Reelmaker.

moreover i didnt really understand how to handle it? knocking it on a hard surface, just the spool, with the heightened end to the surface?
but yeah. I'll leave it as is ... the skin of the thumb doesnt really notice. ; ). he said, he's alright with that
