Seal fishing in the Lea
Some video of a seal catching a fish at Bow Creek. Not quite sure exactly what species, could be a chub but seems a bit thin for that: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/ ... 12631.html

Hmmm. Looks like an ex-mullet to me.

Looks like a Mullet to me.... on a club outing to the tidal Stour in Kent at Pluck's Gutter, one of our members hooked a bream that was snatched by a Seal........ luckily his line parted as his keepnet was too small for a full grown seal and club rules definitely state "Only Recognised Species To Be Placed In Keepnets"
Just one more cast love, and I'll be on me way home

When I used to work by the Lea at Gillender St, Bromley by Bow in the mid 80's we often used to see fish topping in the river there but did not know what they were at the time.

Note the head line - "Moment seal is spotted catching fish in London's River Lea in 'sign of cleaner water' - or should it be - Seal comes inland to eat following mans over-exploitation of seas" ?

Re: Seal fishing in the Lea
I saw both seals, on various occasions, and a porpoise/dolphin in the Tidal Thames in the 1960's.
The Tidal Thames at Twickenham/Teddington was filthy then - but full of fish!
And a good size mullet - worth fishing for!

Re: Seal fishing in the Lea
I fished a match on the tidal stretch of the Wensum in Norwich when I was in my teens. It started off well and then things went very quiet-a couple of seals popped their heads up right in front of us so that was the end of the days fishing. I was quite amazed at the amount of small flat fish that got weighed in at the end.

Re: Seal fishing in the Lea
I think seals have been coming up the tidal stretches of rivers for a very long time whatever the state of the sea fish population.Dave Burr wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 10:59 amAstute and accurateBarbelseeker wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 10:17 am Note the head line - "Moment seal is spotted catching fish in London's River Lea in 'sign of cleaner water' - or should it be - Seal comes inland to eat following mans over-exploitation of seas" ?
