Not a fish was visible that first time I visited Beechmere; an utter
stillness brooded over the place and I felt the strange and sinister atmosphere which, so the story goes,
has been the cause of several suicides.’

Anthologies such as this are quite a nice way of getting a feel for a particular author and seeing whether or not their writing style suits you. There are a few superb writers in that list.

:Thumb: Hi Phil,
Yes. I recognize most of the names you have listed , some great writers. I used to do a fair bit of shore fishing when I lived in North Devon. Baggy point, a good Tope hot spot. Capstone rocks , Ilfracombe, I once managed to catch a 18lb conger there aided by two police officers who came to my aid at 1am to help land the beast. Fished a lot off the pier at Ilfracombe, mainly dogfish LS. pout, the occasional good pollack and a sole. And the River Taw estuary just behind RAF Chivenor where I used to be based.
Not a fish was visible that first time I visited Beechmere; an utter
stillness brooded over the place and I felt the strange and sinister atmosphere which, so the story goes,
has been the cause of several suicides.’
