Jonah's dream

Post by Ryeman »

I wonder if anyone here has read Jonah's Dream by Sven Berlin. I ask because it never gets a mention yet it really is a most remarkable book.
It deals with the author's obsession with a huge pike in a small Southern river, and has everything you can ask of a book; wonderful writing, sparkling imagery, great depth of feeling. It deals with the deep unfathomable life-force we connect to when fishing, in a way that , I feel, no other author has managed to capture.
I first read it when it came out nearly fifty years ago, and it remains, by a country mile, the most unusual and profound fishing book I have ever read.

Thanks for the reminder Alan. It is on my (ever increasing) list of angling books I must read. Perhaps I'll treat myself to a copy this Christmas.
