Dunno 'bout squeaking, but the giant gudgeon we used to catch in the Gade came out growling like a doby confronting a burgler.
Mind you, I smoked more in them days...

They do grunt, it's true...but I have no idea why. What purpose can it serve?
I used to keep tropical fish and I found that some catfish squeak and grunt too. It seems to be the preserve of bottom dwelling fish for some reason!
