Cane Rod Rest

Post by Jeremy Croxall »

I have been trying to make a simple yet elegant rod rest for my cane rod and eventually came up with this.

The "split end" was a little tricky, I split the end of the cane with a knife and with the application of heat managed to create the "v" shape by manipulating the hot cane with pliers. I then cut a piece of cork to fit and epoxied in place to add strength.
Drilling the other end facilitated the insertion of a metal spike coated with epoxy. Whip and varnish to finish. Quite pleased with the result so intend to make others in varying lengths.
Hope you like the pics.

Cant fault it Jeremy, a great idea to split the cane to form the vee, well done.

Thanks Wal, it's very difficult to form the vee because as you try to separate the two split halves, the cane wants to continue to split.
Whipping the cane first doesn't work because it melts in the flame/heat. Next time I do it I'm going to tighten a metal hose clip on to the cane at the bottom of the split whilst heating/bending the top.......I've not seen this done on a cane rod rest before, I got the idea from an old ash garden fork handle!

Copper wire whipping might do the trick Jeremy, you could then whip over it with the coloured thread.

Great idea Jeremy, a true split-cane rod rest :Hat:

Might just have to give that a try for myself (hoping you haven't patented the idea :Chuckle: )

Very nice and very clever!
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.
