I'm fairly sure these are true crucians...

Post by MaggotDrowner »

I'm a bit hopeless at identification of true crucians and their hybrids. I think they are crucians. Any other suggestions? Whatever they are they are beautiful fish and I'm pleased to have caught them.

The tail looks too big to me MD but still very nice fish.

The most precious places in the English landscape are those secretive corners,
where you find only elder trees, nettles and dreams. (BB - Denys Watkins-Pitchford).

Yes, the tails are quite large, especially on the first fish. There are crucians listed on the stocking, along with other carp so could by F1s?

Hopefully this might help FD. With apologies to Peter Rolfe although I suspect he is pleased to see any spread of the crucian interest!

Visit the crucian carp website MD they have devoted a page to recognition.
Not a fish was visible that first time I visited Beechmere; an utter
stillness brooded over the place and I felt the strange and sinister atmosphere which, so the story goes,
has been the cause of several suicides.’

I always start by looking at the mouth - if like a rudd with a protruding lower lip - probably true crucian!

If both lips level - ??? Look at other features like fins etc. Brown gold fish - probably.

If top lip overhangs lower - carp.

Anything in between may be a hybrid.

Fascinating stuff, Mark. I think I need to add " n't " to the word are in the title of the thread.

A shame perhaps that they don't all come with little white numbers on them like this one did:
