Trying not to sound sycophantic, but you've hit the proverbial nail on the head. I`ve lost count the number of times I've crawled through bushes and undergrowth to poke out my quiver tip, lowering a bigg`un down to the water surface and retreating back just to watching the tip....... :Thumb:

I've had similar explosive results with slugs (now there's a mental picture)
I forgot my bait one day and really didn't fancy the drive home and back. Izaaks words about black slugs came back to me so I collected some. Hooking them's not for the faint hearted but my goodness they got results. I could almost choose my fish by stalking along the bank before carefully lowering a juicy oozing slug in front of it.

Try dapping them on the surface under overhanging foliage. I've even had chub on a dapped slug.

I'll give it a go :Thumb: I can imagine it would be a bit of a heartstopping method :Ok:

I've never fished Orthoptera on the hook before, there never seems to be any around here to try, just the odd Speckled Bush cricket around the house every so often. Plenty of lovely juicy black slugs though, I've had the occasional smaller pike take them.

Slugs are a great free bait once you get past all the oooozing they do when you hook them

I've got a pack of grasshopper flies down in the shed, that I keep meaning to try out at some point...
