Hovis - my dear chum , Join me and pennine lad at Ravenfield ponds near to junction 1 Bramley Rotherham.... Excellent Tench and Crucian fishing... set in a secluded wooded valley.

surely there must be a canal you can fish with tench among the lillys.
I couldn't handle living somewhere heaving with commercials.
There's a handful up here and they stick out like a sore thumb for what they are,goldfish bowls full of fish to entertain the lacking.
There's plenty of natural waters up here too but you won't see the bivy brigade fishing these as there's a chance they might not catch.
Don't get me wrong,some folk have no choice but to fish them due to certain factors in their life's and the area they live in but if you are fit and able and love fishing with a chance of catching,then you should never be near a comercial.

Thanks chaps this all gives me hope. I feel an explore at the weekend looking for venues.

there is lake near me where there loads of tench big ones too it does have carp in there but there big and there are a lot more tench than carp there is big bream as well but you don't catch them too often its a great fishery and it free fishing being council owned i fished there since a young child

I do think estate lakes are your best bet - the main lake at Dudmaston Hall is a well-known tench water - lilies, boathouse, reed beds, 19 acres....my best tench there was 6lb 4oz. It's run by the Kinver Freeliners and I'm no longer a member. My brother's just rejoined, though, and so - hopefully - I can fish it again on a guest ticket. I'm on the waiting list to re-join, but that will take two years at best. Two other pools on the estate hold tench, and also carp. The Big Pool probably holds a few massive carp - but the tench dominate, which makes it a rather special tench water.

I'd suggest that pools with tench and no or almost no carp are the way to go. In general, it's rare to find a lot of carp and good tench fishing. This is not a new thing, even Walker remarked upon it and it's been my experience. Lots of carp generally equals few tench.

What's the commercial in Shireoaks (the one near the station) like?

Kazs? Pretty grim by all accounts (not my account as I've not fished it in years). I walked round a few weeks back as there was a steam rally on, top pond was full of bivvies but bottom pond looked better as it was empty.

Yes I can recommend a small lake/pond called Rocklands Mere in Norfolk. It does have some tench but its main species are crucians, its a lovely water to float fish on light gear.
