Dick Walker used to say that a water with lots of coots was a rich water. I've seen some waters with huge numbers of coots at times but I'm not quite sure why. I suspect that it may be due to extensive weed growth of a type which suits the coots. Quite often weed growth is not the same every year; it sometimes disappears, changes or goes through cycles, so it follows that the coots might abandon the water. Waterhens probably have a slightly different diet to coots. I think coots are more vegetarian.
