Perch on small dead bait

Post by Mark »

Has anyone fished small dead baits for perch and do they work.

The most precious places in the English landscape are those secretive corners,
where you find only elder trees, nettles and dreams. (BB - Denys Watkins-Pitchford).

Yes and yes, but not by design, but when eel fishing!

In theory yes. I was experimenting with a fillet of bleak held onto thd hook with bait elastic and caught perch instead of eels!

I'm sure there's a 'sketch' on one of the episodes of Catching the Impossible in which Martin Bowler is catching large perch in Wales under a float with small dead baits...

I wouldn't use deadbaits myself, they do work but in my opinion they’re not a patch on livebaits.
PS the only dead bait I'd use would be prawn.

I believe you'll find it was a lob with pole gear.

I would rather use a piece of silver foil wrapped around the hook with a bit of tail left over. Then something like a swan shot nipped on next to the hook and then fished sink and draw. A friend has very successfully fly fished for perch using home made flies of home cured rabbit skin. He caught the rabbits too :) This neighbour goes hawking and has a most beautiful bird :) He's also a dedicated pin and cane angler and frequents the other forum (Path).

Soft latex swimtail fish (shads) with jig heads (2inch long), unbeatable using sink and draw for perch, then you do not need any real fish, dead or alive!!!
