Centre-pin reel for piking

Post by Tesselata »

Hello traditional fishermen.
I need tips and advise for buying the right reel for piking.
Which centre pin can hold and work with 20lb plus pike ? ?
It would be nice if this reel is available, because the waiting time for the reel of my choce is quite long..
( http://www.chrislythe-centrepins.co.uk/ ... e-pin.html )

I like to use it on static dead bait fishing.

thanks for your help to come.

tight lines
Michael

I'd use a rapidex. People catch very large carp on them, so why not a big pike? Nice and vintage too and no where near those extortionate prices on that website. You're not telling me that it costs anywhere near £500 to make one...

Scroll down on this page to see massive pike caught by TFF member RBTraditional on a rapidex.

I would've thought that a Trudex (especially the 5.5" model} or a nice Adcock Stanton would do the job nicely. That said, If I had £500+ to spend on a reel I'd have no problems at all in parting with that amount of money for Chris Lythes work, and would consider it money well spent.

Hello Michael. I would also suggest a Sea Jecta. Very strong reels and sufficient free spinning to cast well. And it holds a lot of strong mono. For spinnfishing I use a very simple wooden 4inch Nottingham reel without a check! Takes a bit more practice to handle it, but reasonably light and fun to use.

Rapidex and Trudex will certainly do the job, but they weren't designed for such heavy fishing. Have you considered a Young's Windex - pretty hunky reel with adjustable drag? Or - a cheaper option - a Strike Right Tideflow, also with adjustable drag? Both about 4" diameter.

Wide drum Speedia would be fine.

Silex (or Silex Major, No. 2 etc.) for me (kind of a centrepin!).
