Coarse "How To Catch Them" ... Almost There.
I've been slowly adding to my collection of these wonderful little books ... though not the sea or game fish editions.
Delighted to say that I've just added my last but one from my 'wish list' ... a 1955 1st. edition copy of "Barbel" by S. Donald Stone in a very reasonable dust jacket.
(OK ... I admit that I bought the new Medlar edition of "Specimen Fish" by Peter Stone ... but a good condition original retails for about £130 these days !!!)

Well done. I only have a few of them so far. Roach, Perch, and Eels; and Rods: How to Make Them, which I believe is part of the same series.

Blimey 130 quid!......I picked up three crackers for 15 smackers last Saturday from a book stall at the Heathfield show in Sussex.....Admittedly I did have to show my passport at Kent border and drink Harveys best all day....AshbyCut wrote:I've been slowly adding to my collection of these wonderful little books ... though not the sea or game fish editions.

There are prices we all have to pay in search of our Holy Grails, Sir. ;-)RBTraditional wrote:Admittedly I did have to show my passport at Kent border and drink Harveys best all day....

I've just bought the following titles from the series, all with original dust jackets...
Barbel
Roach
Rudd
Perch
Chub
Eels
Dace
They all came from the 'shop' section of a local auction house. Total investment was £15 for the lot, did I do OK Mum?

Would it be a tad impertinent to enquire which one is remaining?

£130 is that really how much they go for, I picked up my copy at a boot fair.

I love these books - the rod building one is a nice reference book. Fly fishing for coarse fish is another favourite read.

Re: Coarse "How To Catch Them" ... Almost There.
As in all things, Sir, it all depends on condition and age !!!
1st editions with immaculate dust covers and no owners inscriptions are only challenged by those signed by the authors !!! I've only managed one 2nd edition signed by the author ... as yet ... and, of course, some of them only had one edition !!!
My current collection of 'coarse fish' editions now stands at :-
“Barbel.” S. Donald Stone. 1st.
“Bream.” Peter Tombleson. 2nd. Inscribed by the author.
“Carp.” D. L. Steuart. 3rd.
“Chub.” Michael Shephard. 2nd.
“Coarse Fishing – Theory and Practice.” J. G. Roberts. 1st.
“Coarse Fishing Baits. Their Preparation and Use.” Frank Oates. 1st.
“Dace.” William J. Howes. 1st.
“Eels.” Raymond Perrett. 1st.
“Fishing in Ponds – Theory and Practice.” David Marlborough. 1st.
“Fly Fishing For Coarse Fish.” “. J. Howes. 1st.
“Gravel Pit Coarse Fishing. Theory and Practice.” A. E. B. Johnson. 1st.
“Grayling.” H. G. C. Claypoole. 1st.
“Match Fishing. Theory and Practice.” Ken Smith. 1st.
“Perch.” Kenneth Mansfield. 3rd.
“Pike.” A. L. Ward. 3rd.
“Roach.” Capt. L. A. Parker. 1st.
“Rods. How To Make Them.” J. B. Walker. 2nd.
“Rudd.” John G. Roberts. 1st.
“Small Fry and Bait Fishes.” Kenneth Mansfield. 1st.
“Specimen Fish.” Peter Stone. (2012 Medlar Press Edition)
“Spoons, Spinners and Plugs.” L, Vernon Bates. 1st.
“Tench.” Harry Brotherton. 4th.
“The Fixed Spool Reel.” Peter Tombleson. 1st.
Wanted :-
“Specimen Fish.” Peter Stone. (1st. edition excellent dust jacket. No inscriptions, unless it's an author's signature))
