The white road westwards - BB

I know there are a few BB fans here. I found this in my local second hand bookshop a while ago, first edition too although I am not a collector. Some of his writing I find a little slow going but I thought I'd try this.

It's typically BB - very country, quite dreamy and meandering like the holiday in the West Country that he describes. It suffers from the flaws in his other books, especially repetitive description ("bubbling" birdsong) and his anthropomorphic take on Nature - the joyful singing of birds, etc. His debt to Hudson is obvious throughout; he often refers to his books, especially Hampshire Days.

But I actually quite enjoyed it. What I found most interesting is his view of that part of the country in 1960. Birds like nightingales will certainly be rarer now. Even then he complained about the tourists (in June). Perhaps this improved in subsequent years when overseas package holidays became available, though I daresay the Southwest is busier than ever now. I wonder how he managed to take a whole month off work; I think he was a full-time writer then, so this was part of his job.

Worth a read, though only a little fishing in it.

I enjoyed the book, mainly because we visit many of the places he writes about quite regularly.

The Autumn road to the Isles, is another of "BB"s traveling books. :tea:

Of the two books I prefer The Autumn Road to the Isles. I have read it several times and often wondered if the trip could be repeated. I concluded that it could not, best not to try.

I found myself in Coch y Bonddu book shop last week and grabbed a copy of this book. It's wonderfully poetic and the drawings are typical BB - beautiful. I'm really enjoying it. Thanks for the heads-up Firebird :Hat:

Glad you like it. I think the prints are the reason is books are still so popular. I've always liked their nocturnal quality.
