Long sentence short: I renewed every single leather part. I had to order seven M38's to get a single of good and clean canvas material.
Best of luck with yours. I tried tons of stuff to get the leather clean. The low leather quality at high effort I was not pleased with. In my case the leather was just too old and hard and stinky as well.
Now its brand-new. And well sought after it will last at least my lifetime.

Steve,

Neatsfoot oil is probably the best leather reconditioning treatment you can get, it really works well. Just follow the instructions and you'll be chuffed with the result.

To clean the canvas, just warm soapy water and a good scrub with a nail brush will work.

It would be worth treating the canvas with some think like Nikwax spray on waterproofing.
