As someone that has owned and or used many wooden reels of many different types over the years, I don't think that I have known a better time to buy a wooden reel. In my opinion, wooden reels "live", they are all different. Some react to changes in temperature, binding can become a problem, but I have had a number of examples that spin well in all temperatures, usually the ones made from "well seasoned" wood.Some people like to polish the brass fittings and gloss the wood, others frown on this practice. It is a matter of personal choice, but grab a bargain while you can! A vintage wooden reel will serve you well for a variety of uses, but if using them for big fish, be careful of the handles! Enjoy and cherish your wooden reel, they are wonderful to own and use!

I don't know what it is either but I wish I had one as it sure is pretty and as you say it spins well.
