I have a Daiwa 7700 in near mint condition but I noticed that when you slacken off the drag the spool will only turn one way Is this normal? Or is something wrong?
Any help greatly appreciated

Yes, that is normal for the most excellent Daiwa 7700. Actually, although most go both ways, the spool on the vast majority of fixed spool reels only needs to turn one way: the direction which releases line. Great reel you have there BTW.
