Introducing Montague 2 1/4" Fly Reel.

Post by Scott »

I took a punt on this fly reel. Paid a little over £20. I did some digging and it turns out it's American, made by Montague. A dainty little thing at 2 1/4", satisfyingly weighty in the hand, smooth as an eel, oozing quality. I'm totally enamoured by it and will hopefully give it a go before season's end.

I was thinking of cleaning it up, any advice on how to go about it?

So what do we think chaps? Anybody else heard of or own a Montague?

We think, that we like it a lot!
Next Tuesday we will know, whether we won the bid on a nice little rod, that would suite the reel very well!
From Wednesday on we will dream of your beautiful reel, that you probably won't ever sell.
We are not envious, not at all!
Greetings from Bamberg
Martin

Looks nice, full strip down and clean I would suggest. The cross bars look a little corroded so a good polish is needed or your line will be trashed.

Nice reel. Montague was a large producer of fly rods in the US. I think I have some info at home. Will check tonight and post if relevant. Best, Bobby

It has the looks of a small multiplier Scott, probably more of a casting reel than a fly reel but I am sure it will hold enough line for any use.
It will certainly look lovely once cleaned up..

You could be right Wal but I asked a guy called Gary from Vintage Fly Tackle, an American tackle dealer, who confirmed it was a Montague fly reel and that the number 80 which is stamped on the foot stands for 80 yards, presumably of line...

Any advice on how I clean it up?

All the best... :Hat:

If you search on the Old Reel Collectors Association (ORCA) site http://reeltalk.orcaonline.org/viewforu ... ef32df3fa6
Scott, you should find quite a lot about Montague reels.
Looks like hard rubber side plates and possibly nickel silver metal work.
A bargain :Hat:

I think any metal polish will bring it up Scott, just take as much of it apart as you can and clean each piece separately.
