Line guard wooden reel.

Post by Fredline »

After reading LuckLucas' excellent thread on "Getting Ready for the Frost" I thought why did I not think of that, use a wooden reel on really cold days. I have had this reel for a while now and thought it will be perfect for such an occasion. It is a 4" standard Sheffield pattern which had a very poor line guard attached to the outer edge. It had to go, so it went and I have replaced it with a much more user friendly Homer style annular fine wire guard. It is just great when a plan comes together. Now bring on the frost.ImageImageImage
If you have no grease with you, and your rings are full of ice, do not cut out the ice with a pen-knife but get your man to put the rings one by one in his mouth, and so to thaw the ice.

Great idea, and beautifully executed too! I may have to attempt something similar. A series of hoops perhaps as my skills probably won't stretch to soldering a cage!
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

A great job :Hat: and a much nicer idea than some of those ugly Bickerdyke things you sometimes see shamelessly nailed onto the backs of these lovely reels..

I adore these wooden pins and I own four. I only wish they had shallower spools.

Shallow spool versions are out there Jack. See my journal entry "Getting ready for the frosts"

Have seen that. You did well with that one. I've never seen them before.

I had the problem with the depth of spool, but I was determined to use the reel, so I got some cork sheeting, I wound this round the spool till I had the required depth, then used one layer of self sticking cork sheet to hold the other cork in place, this meant if I wanted to remove the cork, nothing was actually stuck to the reel. I know some will say "what if the cork slips", but it surprising how good the grip of cork is on wood. I have not had any trouble with bedding in or slipping so far. :Thumb:
