Raising money for Breast Cancer Care at Romsey, please buy a float from Ted!

Post by Tengisgol »

No apologies for giving this a quick bump this evening; please do find Ted at the fair and buy a couple of floats to raise money for breast cancer care, thanks all in anticipation.

----------------------------

I have posted about this before but here is the back story. Mike at the Red Lion gave me an old float box full of half made floats; elder pith stems on quill, a bit like Topper floats. They were made but not finished and they sat in my garage for a year or so. Well last winter I took them out and gave the tips a red or orange paint finish and a coat of varnish. They aren't too pretty (and certainly not too symmetrical!) but they will work just fine.

What then do I do with them (all seventy!)?

I work for QBE Insurance and this year our charity partnership is with Breast Cancer Care. Every donation is matched (I.e. doubled). So I thought I would sell the floats and donate the proceeds.

So, please please visit Ted's stall (Lea Dweller) at Romsey because he has kindly offered to put them there for sale with a tin to collect any sale proceeds. The floats are only £3 each but this means that for every float purchased £6 will go directly to helping someone out there who needs it, to receive specialist nursing care and support. Think how much extra satisfaction that will give when they dib under to the pull of a winter roach, chub or grayling. Surely Izaak will look kindly on the user of such a float!

I thank you all in advance of your generosity (and if you do buy one, and it brings you luck, wouldn't it be great to post the catches here on this thread!).

Here is a pic of some of them:

Well done Phil.

Unfortunately I can't be at Romsey but I wish you luck.
If any remain unsold, I hope not! I'll happily find a place for them on my table at Redditch.
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Sir, I can't make Romsey ... but I will donate £10 + P&P for a float. Please let me know how much and where to pay via PM. Best regards.

My word chaps this is really generous, thank you so much. I will send a PM Richard and AC.

Richard, I am so sorry to hear about your stepfather, it is a horrible disease. Some of my own dearest friends are battling cancer at the moment. As I said in a separate post earlier, having listened to John Gierach's wise words, it really is important that we do the things we enjoy today - carpe diem etc.

Chubman, the NHS similarly saved the life of one of my colleagues in the last couple of years. It was a miracle, I have worked with him since I was sixteen and its so great to have him back next to me in the office. It sounds like you're doing well and I thank you for your support.

Thank-you once again.

I just got back from a long trip, following the tackle fair at Romsey last Sunday ( I went on to visit Torquay, Plymouth, Brixham, then drove back to Arundel for a couple of nights). I must say I was disappointed at not selling more of the floats for Tengisgol's charity. At £3 each, for an elder pith and crowquill combination they were good value, albeit not visually perfect! I know that several TFF members made a donation, a few other visitors to Romsey bought a few floats, but I was still surprised at the lack of support for a good cause! Onwards and upwards, I will be happy to take the remaining floats to Redditch, as I will be having a table with Fredline. Perhaps I will sell some more floats, they are surely worth £3?
