I've just joined a swedish vintage tackle collectors page on Facebook and sent the admin a message asking if any of them know of the company and might they be able to dig up some information for me.

Thanks Strathamender, I love my Black Seal rod and their centre pins, it would be good to have some sort of background to them other than they were also made in Sheffield.

Strange how one thing leads to another. Have a look here. viewtopic.php?f=198&t=16507
The coiled line travels from the reel, it brings up at last, the hook goes home, and then begins the test of skill. "BB"

Funnily enough I saw that and thought the same thing. It's a very nice rod, sorry I can't help Nol.

Royal Seal, just occasionally spelt Royle Seal is a separate entity to Black Seal, which was the trading name of RG Edwards, a Surrey based importer and trader who first started by selling their goods out of the back of a van apparently.

Though it seems they were bought by Grays of Cambridge and then sold off to EARC:

Julian Pardoe is the son of the EARC founder btw.

Nobby, thanks for your insight this is all very interesting to me. To follow on from what you've said about EARC, it turns out that they were later taken over by LEEDA.

EARC had their factory (making rods) in Barford near Wymondham near Norfolk.

See the last post of this thread.

Thanks for the sleuthing Nobby, I don't think anyone will ever get to the bottom of the whole Mordex thing but this certainly helps a lot with who their wholesalers were.

Edit.

It would appear that Julian Pardoe must have lost his loggin details on there, the last post he appears under a different name as it is then 2 years later.

Also of interest, though with risk of going away from the Mordex/black seal thing:-

Milbro was short for Millward Brothers & was owned by Grampian Holdings, which was a public company with a stock exchange quotation. They have now, as far as I know, no interest in Tackle. They were the UK distributers for Daiwa. When Milbro had got the Daiwa turnover up to sufficient critical mass that they could stand on their own, Daiwa split from Milbro & set up their operation in Scotland.

Someone once told me that Leeda is the current name of what started out as Lee Products, who fatally merged with Allcocks and JW Youngs in 1964.

EARC also employed the late Bob Kirk who built rods previously for Pegley Davies and earlier still had his own firm in Hampton Wick...his cane rods are quite sought after, particularly his Walker Mk IV.
