My Altex has the spring washer (labelled 4) and the clutch is smooth.

I must admit I am a little unsure on these springs, Wal. Everyone that I have looked at that seemed undersize also looked like it had signs of fracture at the ends......but maybe that was just the manufacturing process?

What does seem clear is that the reels that have a 'double helix' spring have far better clutches.

Your illustration, though obviously a drawing and not a photograph, is so accurate and so detailed I have to conclude you are right.......
