Refurbishing a Ebonite Reuben Heaton reel

Post by Evert van der Plas »

Hi Gents
Made a start to refurbish this Reuben Heaton ebonite reel
The front plate having a few problems and there are broken off a few pieces from the rim that i want to repair.
First thing dissemble the reel and cleaning all parts, polish the brass and the front plate ebonite to reduce the the scratches and the two previous repaired crack on the front plate, not a easy job but is possible to make this reel look good

the crack show best on the back side, the repairs are good but the finish not

these pictures shows the work that must be done and the next pictures the progress

cleaned the backplate and polished the brass
Image
the brass cross cleaned up and give it a first polishing job
Image
polished the latch and cleaned the bobbin

Polishing the front plate and put linseed oil on it after cleaning it to get more original color back

wiped the oil off after a few minutes and the result it good so far, it need to be polished a few times more to get some gloss back

just to get a idea how this reel is going to look when done, wil update this post when finished

Very nice Evert! I really look forward to seeing such a beautiful reel returned to its best.
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

I feel soooo inadequate !!!!! :Scared:

Thats fantastic almost like it would have been originally. The brass would have been lacquered, but I have not seen any really good lacquered restoration. You should try and find the answer and let us know.

Once again a great job.
