And, Nobby, yes you're right, TIR is "total indicated reading".

So it refers to a dial gauge on the perimeter, where the total sweep of the pointer is 0.0006" from minimum to maximum reading.
For those of us who also like metric units, that's on only a TIR of 15 microns. 15 microns for goodness sake !!!!

I'm guessing that much of the might be working clearance in the bearings.

Nobby, micron (micrometre) is one millionth of a metre (0.001 mm). In the old days the wavelength of infrared radiation used to be reported in microns - that might be where you made the connection with a beam of light?

You had me thinking for a minute there, Nobby. But no, you are a factor of 1000 out.

1 micron is 1 millionth of a metre = 1 / 1000000

But that's in metres. So in millimetres, that's 1000 / 1000000, which is 0.001 mm
