J. Pale of Bow, London
I've just been offered a cane rod labelled "J. Pale of Bow, London" and called an Avon. It look to be in good condition but I can't find any trace of the maker/shop on-line or on this site. As my adopted home is in east London, I'd quite like to own a local rod and I've yet to see a Sowerbutts I can afford! Does anyone know anything about them? Thanks in advance

If you look at the rod's label it come from:-
J. P---
Fishi----
Spec--
20 Sta ---------------------
Wood--------??
Fill in the blanks!
Was the rod made by them or is it a shop label?
Either way - a nice looking rod but a bit too pricey 4 me!

Re: J. Pale of Bow, London
It’s a fair cop Olly
Thing is, I’ve only been buying and using cane for 3 years and only a member here for less than a year. I’m on a learning curve and, whilst I’ve seen comments about shops buying in and badging rods by other makers, it’s the first time I have considered buying what might be one.
I was a bit surprised to see no other mentions of this label anywhere on the web. So, rather than guess, I thought that I would ask. Cheers!

I also could not find J Pale of Bow anywhere. But I put up the script on the rod which may help with identification.

Re: J. Pale of Bow, London
Well honestly! This is worse than the Christmas quiz.
It obviously does not say J Pale of Bow on the label
You have me using my failing eyesight to search my A-Z - that final line Wood .... says Woodford or Wood Green to me
This will pre-date postcodes and there is a good chance that 20 Sta... was destroyed during the last war and is now a block of flats.
I think the least you can do is ask your tempter to tell you (us) the full details of the label. We need to know.

Sorted. It is Wood Green Road I think Bow is just the old fashioned dialing code..

Only found 1 "Pales" in 1911 whole of England Census! Born 1909!
So an uncommon name should be easy to trace!
