Mystery Rod called The Chevin

Post by Santiago »

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/cane-splitcan ... true&rt=nc

I won this off ebay and it's just arrived. Can anyone help me identify the maker/brand?

What really surprised me is how amazingly light it is! I've not yet placed a centrepin on but when I do I just know it will be very well balanced. I've an inclin that someone from the forum was a previous owner and restored it, well they made a good job!! The rods not perfect though, and I wouldn't expect it to be for the price I paid; when set up there is a slight deflection to the left, I think they lined the tip rings slightly in the wrong place!

Looks like there is a slight compression that's being repaired in the butt section and you can see this on the butt photo. This certainly is a rod one could hold all day trotting for roach and dace etc., so will be ideal for light trotting from my punt!

Being called The Chevin, do you think it would cope with a nice fat chub??

I don't recall off the top of my head any maker's rod called The Chevin. Could it be perhaps a home-build or conversion/restoration project?

The excellent builders Rawson and Perrin make a fine rod called 'The Chevin'. Alas, this is not one of those. I'd agree with ST that this is a conversion/restoration. Looks tidy enough for the money though and there's only one way to see if it's up to that first surging run from a large chub.

That looks like a nice little "user" BF, & at a very reasonable price too.

Good luck fishing with it :Thumb: .

Thanks! I never knew a cane rod could be so light. It's 10'4" with a 27" handle! I do'nt think many makers made rods that lenght. But it's a shame nobody knows the maker! It weighs about 330g or just over 11oz. I do'nt know how well that compares to other rods of similar lenght though!

According to the 1938-39 Allcocks Guide, the Wizard at 11ft weighs approx 12oz. Perhaps your rod feels light because the long handle means you are holding it nearer the point of balance?

Thanks Paul, I figured that was the case. Still, 11 to 12 oz is pretty light!
