It's the 200th anniversary today of the opening of the Sheffield Canal (now known as the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal) which not only connected Sheffield to the inland waterway network but also enabled large scale delivery of coal and coke from the South Yorkshire Coalfield, thereby kicking off the steel industry. It seems to have been celebrated by a lot of pointless toing and froing by fancy Dan narrow boats (wrongly described in the media coverage as 'barges') but the fish may have calmed down a bit by Sunday when I intend to get out pay tribute in my own way.
