in the past I set the rod up parallel to the bank and used a marker board with the tip aligned to the board.. if it was very windy I used a lump of plasticine rolled around the tip (not the eye obviously, and not too much or you get tangles with light leads) to add more weight and stability I used to set the tip to show pulls and drop-backs... biggest tip I can offer, is to sit on your hands till you get a positive pull

In the 60's, I used to use a swingtip for bream. Not tried it since then! I even managed to scrounge together sufficient money to buy a 'specialised' swingtip rod, a Sportex (hollow 'glass) - even though my 'hero' Richard Walker didn't have much good to say about them, if I recall correctly. Can't remember what model it was. Any extra weight was added with lead wire, and I remember spending ages making several 'target boards'. These were useful in providing a bit of shelter in windy conditions.
