Hi Nobby and Crucian,
how about starting from live bamboo from my estate here in Thailand.
I'll send you some samples and if its good we'll proceed from there.
Best regards

That's very generous but I imagine that the lads here will want to be sure of getting hold of the genuine tea tree bamboo, Bambusoideae amabilis and selecting the right culm is a bit of a black art, it seems.

Tonkin is huge region and also borders Vietnam which is part of Southeast Asia
I'm pretty sure we have it here and hope to have some solid evidence to back it up.

I haven't back read the reason for the quest for tea tree bamboo. I did speak to an aspiring rodmaker however who spoke highly of the culms available at Homebase.

I remember Peter Mackenzie-Philps describing how he had a man in India going from village to village carefully selecting only the best hackle necks from those eagerly prepared by the villagers on the off-chance that one such might make Grade AA quality and thus earn an extra coin. He produced an entertaining catalogue.

Cross section of our local bamboo...its 7 cm in diameter- There are plenty of the so called "power fibres" on the surface layer.

Hi Nobby and Crucian,
Steve ( Shed Monkey ) now has in his possession some of the bamboo culms from our estate.
So the first stage from field to workshop is complete.
Best regards

The culm has landed :Thumb:

It's still pretty green as Mem only cut it 2 weeks ago, so will need a fair bit of time to season before it's ready for splitting.
From what I've been able to glean it'll need around 12 weeks, although in this cool climate potentially longer.

Mem - it was a pleasure to meet you and your recent Perch captures were very impressive indeed :Hat:

Cheers
Steve
