The Gentle Art of Angling

Post by Jmooney »

Hi All,

I'm trying to add more of Mr. Venables works to my library and I'm looking at this title but would love to hear fellow angler's impressions of the book and what it's about. Is it a memoir or more an instructional volume?

Any thoughts are much appreciated,

Jim

It's neither. It's a contemporary look at angling history and the development of angling styles viewed from Venables' take in the 50s. Nice book, easy to read, with illustrations. I don't ALL the Venables titles but have the majority and this one is worth having.

It is written in a very old fashioned style but I feel that this adds to the charm of the book. I love also the advertised book on the rear cover 'The Gentle Art Of Pipe Smoking' ahh those were the days :)

If you don't yet have it I strongly recommend his 'Illustrated Memoirs' as this gives a deeper understanding of the man in my opinion.

Thank you chaps! I'll be ordering it for sure. Having a small operation next week so I'll be layed up for a while. Perfect time to catch up on some reading!

My hearty good wishes that it all goes smoothly, Sir.
