Precision Rods "Festival" - twin compound taper

Post by AshbyCut »

A very happy chappy here, because I now own the 3rd of the 4 variants I know about of this rod.

This Precision Rods "R. Sealey's Festival" has a whole cane butt, and compound tapers on both the centre and tip sections. The other 2 variants I own have a) a straight taper on both centre and tip sections, and b) a compound taper on the centre section but a straight taper on the tip.

This is an early production model as it has spigotted ferrules, so possibly from as early as 1951.

The rod is currently being restored for me by a friend, and I'm hoping that I may have it in my hands in time for Christmas or early New Year.

I'll keep you updated, but here's a sneaky preview of the new whipping going onto the butt section as a teaser ...

Lovely Mal!
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

A swift update. TFF member CaneAndAble continues to weave his magic, and the guides and intermediate whippings are done on both the butt and centre sections ready for sealing. Just the tip section to whip.

Latest update ... all three sections now completely whipped and sealed ... and ready to be masked before the finish is applied next week !!! The only thing left to do before that is replace the badly corroded butt cap.

And it's this week that the chemists have mislaid my prescription !!! It'll have to be a tincture to calm the nerves, then !!! :Wink

Latest update from CaneAndAble ... work is progressing apace, and the initial coats of varnish have been applied ... though I'm informed that there will be more flattening and more coats before he's happy ! Tincture time !!!
