Aerial Match 1939

There was a nice Aerial match at angling auctions Chiswick earlier in the month, it had a reserve of £1100 and was unsold at £900.

I think £900+ commission was a good price, £1100+ was probably too much.

I have seen a number over the years in the flesh, most of the time the black painted back is in poor condition, and they often have wobble.

I would still like one though

According to my Phil Waller book the original 1939 reel is called 'The Aerial Match' as engraved on the reel whereas the 1965 one is 'The New Match Aerial'.

Can't get more clearer than this for the reel name.

Guys, This is a wonderful reel which freely spins and is I think a perfect example of the Ariel at work and YES they didn't make many so its rare .....Mark great comment ref the 42 shillings original price ....I expect it will go for a bit more now eh!!!!!!

Incidentally there is no name on the black backplate saying ARIEL MATCH which I found confusing although it is unquestionably a Ariel Match so maybe some were made without any backplate stamp?

I was always under the impression the tooling for the reel was destroyed during the war, hence, they were supposedly only produced for a year, I've seen afew of these over the years and I've only come across one that ran true, the black paint tends to peel off abit to easy and they seemed to fetch more in the past than they do now, mind you, I think that's true for afew reels, for me , taking it at face value, just looking at the dimensions and build, I don't see to much difference in a flickem/ trudex etc,
But collectors go mad for these. You used to see these reels regular on eBay often fetching upto £1,300,
However , not seen one for a while now, keep it safe.

Actually I have just noticed that there is a stamp on the flanges of " 16 " on both flanges . not sure what this means !! Does anyone have any idea or knows someone who does ?

It could of course be as simple as its the 16th reel to be made !!!!!
