Help on this Aerial please!

Post by Buller »

Hi guys
I’ve just ended my wonderful 3 week road trip around southern England. My wife, 2 children and I had a fantastic time!
On to matters Allcocks:
This reel was waiting for me on my return to my shop in South Africa. I’d like to know more about it as the owner wants to trade me some fly- fishing gear from my shop for it. Spool measures approximately 3 1/2 inches and the cage measures 4 1/2 inches. No spool wobble and everything is tight. Beautiful patina. Doesn’t spin like my Speedia and I’m not sure if it’s meant to? Dated 1928 by the looks of things. Any idea on value guys?
Thanks in advance

It’s an Allcocks Popular. Somewhere on the backplate it should be stamped with the Stags Head and “Popular” name. It should be direct on the metal, not a badge riveted on

Price wise it’s obviously as valueable as what someone is prepared to pay for it. They certainly come up for sale and go for around £100 to £100 plus on eBay. I would say £90 is the average.

Thanks for the input - much appreciated. What sort of fishing were these smaller aerials used for?

Is it meant to spin for a good length of time like a Speedia for example?

I have 2 - lovely little reels. I use mine for small rivers - float fishing or light ledgering.

They should spin well and are better than my narrow drum Speedia!
