There's times when the phrase "mixed emotions" ..
..... strikes home, and today has been one of those times.
Thanks to a friend on the TFF, I was led to a reel for sale which I knew it would be a privilege to become the custodian of. Joining me soon will be a 4 1/2 inch Allcock's Aerial, 12 spoked, with a PB line guard ... dating (I believe) to circa 1920/25. The handles have been replaced at some point, the line guard has been moved to allow it to be used 'left hand wind,' and the foot has been shortened to accommodate modern reel fittings ... but that makes it very, very usable today.
The sadness is knowing that it only became available as it's previous owner, well know for many years in angling circles, was recently diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease and has been given only a year to live.
I could have the changes made to the reel reversed, and increase it's value by maybe 25% ... but that's NOT happening. As a tribute to the previous owner it will remain as he used it ... and proudly taken to the bank, where I shall raise my hat to the Gentleman before casting with it and, hopefully, winching one or two in !!!

Well done Mal, such a sad story but the old reel couldn't have found a better home.

I am so glad it came to you, Mal. You're a real gent.

There can surely be no better place for the reel to reside and be used. Nice story Mal (edit; of course reference to the reel's continuity but naturally my thoughts are with the previous owner and his family) and I hope it catches you a whopper (or two).

AC use and enjoy that reel, from what I see on TFF that reel could not be in better hands. If I were the previous owner I would be happy that my reel was safe and being fully appreciated in ownership and most importantly, use.
