Is there much size difference between the 66 and the 44? Or am I getting the wrong end of the stick, maybe different eras? How do they compare to the size of a 55 ...smaller? I’m presuming the 40 is the predecessor to the 44?

The 44 came about in the late 60's I believe Rob. The 40 was introduced in the mid 70's around the same time as the 44x.
BeechmereLake is the absolute Abu expert on this forum and will know far more than me for sure.

I stand to be corrected - 40/60/?? ABU Cardinal series. 33/44/66/77 Cardinal series. 52/152/54/154/55/155/57/157 Cardinal series.

The 40/60/70 reels were the budget Cardinals the main difference being they didn't have the worm gear drive like the more expensive 33/44/66/77 reels. They are still excellent reels though and at the time nothing could compete with them at the price they sold for. A 40 was my first proper reel when I was a kid and it is still giving excellent service today.

The 66 is significantly bigger than the 44. The 66 has a similar sized body to your Cardinal 55s but has a bigger diameter but slightly narrower spool. The 66 makes a good carp reel or a pike/bass spinning reel. I pair my 66 with 12lb line for spinning and my 44 with 8lb line for chub fishing.
