I'm pretty sure that the writing says general purpose Nobby.

I was going to bid on that reel myself ,I wanted a look at the box ,they was always described as general purpose reels because they sold them to both coarse and trout anglers ,deep enough to hold a fly line ,and smooth enough for coarse fishing weather ledgering or floatfishing.

I missed the end of the auction on that one all the early model mk1's & mk2's had brass feet ,some are darker than others which can be almost white in colouring .the date is good though its harder to pinpoint the dates of the early model speedia .

it did look a very nice reel ,you've got a nice one there .
I try to be funny... but sometimes I merely look it! Steve

It says feet, not yards!
Nice reel nobby!

Yup. 300 feet equals 100 yards.

I love the leaflet's mention of the WR Products Technical Advisory Staff........they were clearly a small outfit so that probably means Bert in the Canteen or Mavis in the Sales Office...... :Hahaha:

If they were genuinely a Limited Company they should be registered with Companies House, shouldn't they? I wonder if there's a way to find out more about them that way?

I recently wrote a bit on my blog about Speedias....so little known about them.

Very nice buy that.
The hand writing on the box is the same as the one I purchased earlier in the year and my box has the date 20 Mar 1951 printed in the lid.
Lovely reels and so light.

Ah. Another box date-stamped. Thanks for posting...it looks as though we can be more confident that the date is correct then.

I've just been cleaning the reel...it had that smell of old grease that always takes me back to my Grandfather's garage....and it's come up a treat. Turns very easily indeed. It's now on display with my 'best' reels, rather than sitting in its box.

The seller on eBay, Tezpol... ( who I was surprised to learn was a woman ) went to the trouble of sealing the leaflet away safely in a little envelope....and then wrote "instructions" on it lest I chuck it with the packing. What a star!

I guess everyone with a Speedia in a box should check inside the lid?
