J.S. Sharpe

Post by StalkingLuke »

I have picked up a 9 foot, two piece split cane fly rod. I'm not sure what line rating it is but it has a Scottie transfer and then another that is part missing - The Bro? could it be brook although at 9 feet would imagine it is a bit long for fishing brooks. Apart from the part damaged label it is in perfect condition with high quality fittings and original bag. A bargain that my brother found at a car boot sale.

Does anybody have any more information?
Thanks

Sorry, I don't have any specific info but Scottie rods still exist and maybe able to shed some light on it.

Does the scottie logo have the word 'Impregnated' beneath it? If so it probably won't have any intermediate whippings, and should feature plain purple/claret whippings to the rings, and a red indented sighting dot on each ferrule. The nine footer took a number six line. I had one for many years and it's a perfectly serviceable rod for stillwaters and larger rivers, if a trifle heavy.

If it is not impregnated it will be an earlier model, possibly with intermediates. I have no experience of these, but Sharpe's were a highly regarded brand in the middle part of the 20th Century, usually listed just beneath Hardy in the Trout & Salmon classifieds of the period, so it should still be a reasonable rod.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

The Scottie logo doesn't have "impregnated" below and it does have intermediate whippings, so is it likely to be an older model? It has the unfinished word "The Bro-" just above.
Below are a few images what do you think?

Nice pictures Luke and I'm sure a very nice rod.

Luke

Do you think it could be The Brook? Maybe the last "ok" has been removed or flaked.

I've yet to cast a line so not sure how it handles yet but it does feel like it has a good action.
SK I first thought The Brook, but small stream springs to mind when I think of a brook and that would suit a much shorter and lighter rod. I will try emailing the company.

I believe that Scottie Rods have now ceased to trade. Gary Nicholson might have some idea of what it is though:

Looks like a Braemar to me - if you want to compare photos (sorry don't know how to upload to here yet!) I have one up on the VFC site at the moment.
