How Much?

Post by Dave Burr »

I've heard that the impregnated cane used in these rods is supposed to be very good, I'm on the look out for both a MkIV Avon and a Carp but what sort of price will I have to pay?

Any information gratefully received.

Thanks Scott, what sort of action/test curve is the spinning rod in comparison to say a MkIV?

Another fan of Scotties (originals). The Avon is the rarer of the two, from rough/average to near minter £120- £240`sh. The carp is cheaper, as a more common rod.

I like them, however, I'd say they are an acquired taste. They are nicely made and I think they look lovely. I've noticed some detail differences over the production run with different rings being used at times. Barder has written that he considers them inferior to a varnished rod. Some think the impregnating makes them heavier. I'd say their Carp is a lighter taper than the true MkIV so not quite as powerful.

Their Avon is definitely NOT the best MkIV style Avon, I my opinion that honour goes elsewhere. Again the Sharpes Avon is quite different to the B. James. The latter has more weight in the tip making it better for casting light baits.

I'll add if the rod has been varnished overall this isn't the original intention. They should have a very soft lustre and only the whippings should be varnished. The Butt ring and female ferrule should be over whipped in copper wire.

PM also sent.

I got a good look at a Carp the other day for the first time at Angling Auctions (thanks to Tadpole for pointing out the correct copper whippings!) - for some reason we haven't had one through our doors before - and I wasn't overly impressed to be honest: it was particularly interesting because a B James was standing right next to it (and in my opinion far overshadowing it) so was esy to compare the two. I bought the B James!

I would dearly love to know – I've just got a feeling Sharpes Carp is in fact one of their salmon spinning rods in disguise.

I've seen a few salmon conversions over the years and to say the least, they are a tad ropey. I have a carp rod, which is a reasonable rod, but again differs from other Scottie carp rods I've seen. My version has a larger stand off but ring, with original whippings, designed to be used with a pin. I was told many years ago by an ex Sharpes employee, is that they would on occassions build rods to specific requests.
I`ve streamlined my Sharpes collection and sold a Scottie Avon and two spinning rods at Romsey just gone. My opinion for what's is worth, the carp/salmon rods are two different beasts

Thanks. I've only thought that as the Carp seems to have a lighter tip than the usual MkIV and I've always wondered why this was. I guessed, clearly wrongly, that they might have used Salmon blank.

Do you have an idea of how many they built? I've been lead to believe it was about 400 of each but I often read that the Avon is a rare rod, more so than the carp.
