Advice please on spliced rods

Post by DavidM »

As a newcomer to this forum I'm hoping with the joint expertise of members I may be able to get the answer I'm looking for.

I have acquired a three piece spliced split cane rod which has been partially restored. From looking at the splices it appears to be impregnated and from the length (very approximately 13') and siting of the reel fitting it's clearly a two handed salmon rod; however the reel fitting has a black thread with chrome fittings. There are no transfer remnants, no numbers nor any other identification marks at all.

Basically before I do anything with it I'd like to try and establish if it is likely to have been made by Sharpes so I have two questions:

1. Were Sharpes the only company to make spliced rods (from my research I can't find any others)?
2. Did Sharpes use winch type reel fittings (all of my research would indicate they didn't)?

Many thanks for any information.
