I'd have thought that a set in the butt section is the result of the rod being strained to/beyond the limit and may well be impossible to rectify. But I wouldn't worry too much about it, these rods are pretty tough. As for the reel seat, I'd leave it be, the worse thing about heaving into a lively lump at close quarters is the reel coming loose from the handle (we've all been there), with the screw reel seat you have a secure fitting which I consider superior. But its your call :)

I bid on that rod mainly because it had a good reel fitting. Impregnated rods don't need varnishing over the cane, just the whippings. However, from the photos it looks as if it has already been varnished by someone. I had planned to strip it right back to the cane and use Sharpes fittings to restore it. If the kink is not too bad (he told me it was a couple of mm) I would leave it alone.

Thanks both. The good news is the kink is quite minor just above the corks so I may just leave it alone. As for the rest of the rod it looks original and is the correct lenght and it hasn't been varnished over its entire lenght. I don't know if I can get on with the reel being so far down the rod, maybe I should try it first and take it from there.

I had a look at the one I think you bought. I too thought the reel seat was strangely positioned so left it alone... ...anyway I hope you enjoy the rod, I love Scottie's.....

Scott,
You are to blame for me buying the rod, that fly rod of your is just lovely.
The reel position isn't that low really wih it being a spinning rod but I still want full cork with sliding reel bands
