Re: Chris Yates Merlin
And just moving a reel a few inches down the handle can move the balance point down inches towards the top of the handle. And the longer the handle the easier it is to have the reel near the top of the handle.
Just out of interest how long is the handle of a Merlin?

Found this! With a 24" handle the best balance point will be gained by placing the reel several inches from the handles top, perhaps up to 8 or 10" depending on the weight of the reel! And being an Avon one should be able to trot with it, but perhaps having a rest now and then might be a good idea! And will give one more time to absorb the nature and river bank environs!!

Re: Chris Yates Merlin
I always have my reel fairly near the top of the Merlin handle and find the balance fine.

Re: Chris Yates Merlin
Rusty, try a JW Young 2041CL fitted right at the top of the rod handle, or a John Wilson
Heritage reel I found these reels just about right for trotting with the Merlin, I also have
a Barder reel which is perfect for rolling or link ledgering but I don't like it for trotting,
I like my hand to be above the reel when trotting.
It's all about how you feel comfortable with what reel you use as we all prefer different
reels, on my Merlin I use a Daiwa TDX fixed spool reel for other types of fishing, a modern reel, yes,
but far superior to vintage reels, and it looks good on the rod.

Nigel, that chub picture is up there with the best shots I've seen on this forum.
Stunning shot - very evocative.

Re: Chris Yates Merlin
Thank you once again for the advice and the PM’s that I’ve received.
I did some proper measuring with a Scotton Long Trotter attached and with the reel as far up the handle as it will go the balance point is 8 inches above the handle not 12. That’s the way I fish, rod in one hand with fingers behind the reel backplate and feeding from a bait pouch with the other, I‘ll try moving the reel down and changing my technique. It would be a travesty to sell it on without giving it a chance so I’ll be using it for a season to see how it goes (thanks Badger1). Just removing it from its bag is a thrill and I don’t want to lose that so soon.
In the meantime I’ll keep my eyes open for something to supplement the Merlin.

Re: Chris Yates Merlin
Rusty, should you decide to sell it go back to Edward as he will get the best price as he has people in the wings just waiting for rods and they will pay top whack but aren't the sorts to look here or on Ebay. He will take a cut but you'll still make more money than selling privately.
