I thought the hammer price was going to be £8,200, that was the sum I had in mind. Wonder who bought it, there can't be that many collectors with that kind of money.

I'm a MkIV Avon fan. I have two of them both bought new in the 60s. Nice as they are I would never have believed one was worth that much!

OK mine is not a James. It is one I made in 1963 from Ted Oliver blanks.

However, my biggest fish on this rod, (not my BEST fish 'cos I don't fish for carp), was a carp of 27½ lbs three years ago. To be fair it did not fight at all well because it was partly spawned out, just after the two week close season for that water, and was fairly beaten up with some scales missing. I assume it had had a hard time in spawning. I was fishing for tench with a single prawn in the margins. The rod was teamed with my beloved Rapidex.

A week later I had a 23½ lbs carp, which fought fairly well. Again I was fishing for tench.
