Hardy JJH Triumph 8ft 9in 6wt.

Post by Hampshireboy »

Hi all , could someone tell me if the above rod always came with snake guides as all the images I have seen seem to have them. My recently acquired one has different guides. Just wandering if the later models might have been changed. Regards. Steve

No, those rings are wrong.
It would have had an agate lined tip and butt, and snake inters
do you know the serial number on the butt, that will date it, and see if anyone has a catalogue of that year?

Thanks chaps . I will see if there is a serial no on the butt. It seems it was probably refurbed then with cradle rings. Thanks for putting me right with regards to the rings, still a lot to learn. The rod is the right length and in stunning condition , don’t know why they wouldn’t have stuck with snake eyes when re furb was done.

According to the 1960s Hardy catalogues:-

The JJH Triumph Fly Rod. Rings: 'Agatipe' butt and end rings with snake intermediate.
Tyings: Ordinary spaced narrow bands, crimson colour silk. Rings and joints, crimson silk tipped with scarlet silk.

From your photographs, it would appear that this rod has been re-whipped at some point; probably after the end of the tip was snapped off. The tyings over the rings are also excessively long and not as the original..

Thankyou Watermole, what confused me was that it’s exactly 8ft 9in when put together but as you can see below the two sections are not the same length side by side, presuming they would of been. Image

I have one very similar. From 1939, it's 8' 9" or just over when assembled but the tip section is 3 inches shorter than the butt like yours.

I can't find any reference to the JJH Triumph being made as a 9 footer so I assumed this was how it was originally made. Puzzling.

It is puzzling. Also there is no serial number on the butt so absolutely clueless as to when it was made.
