I'm hoping that's a real 'rare,' Sir ... and not the 'rare' used on a certain internet auction site !!!Pafpuff wrote:Very nice rare rod Mal, well done that man

Like all TFF members I've met LL, Sir ... including me ... 'punching above our weight,' I think the modern idiom has it !!!LuckyLuca wrote:They don't call me lucky for nothing AC

Re: Hardy Richard Walker Avon
This could well be a factor.Hardys were very experienced game fishing tackle makers and often used unlined butt rings on their salmon and trout rods.I guess they and RW deemed lined rings were not needed and it helped with the lightness a little.I very much doubt that it was due to cost. The RW Carp/Avon rods also have cork butt ends and a "clean" look to them.Late Chapman rods,Ledgerstrike in particular had this modern finish and had NL (New Look) after the name to signify this.Beresford wrote:I've always wondered why they didn't but I think the Hardy ring might be lighter than an agate.

I agree that it can't have been for cost reasons. Perhaps they thought their ring style was superior to the big agates others used, although they put some odd mixes of rings on various rods over the years. I'm sure I've seen in print Walker later recommending the plain cork end to the handle of a MkIV style rod and it's well known that he thought intermediate whippings 'a load of rubbish!'
I love the clean aesthetics of the Hardy rods like Mal's example here where the natural beauty of the cane isn't reduced by superfluous intermediate whippings.

Hi,
Lovely rod and you might be interested that the "C/S" part gives the date and refers to March 1967.
